How does Calorad Bovine Formula work?
Researcher Talks about Calorad...
Dr. John Zimmerman
has a Ph.D. in Biological Psychology and
Neuroscience. He has been involved with
sleep research for over 30 years.
"My name is Dr. John Zimmerman. I'm the
director of one sleep lab in Reno and the
owner of another sleep lab in Carson City,
both in northern Nevada. I've been in the
field of sleep disorders and
electrophysiology for over 30 years.
There is an aspect of the delivery system of
Calorad, which is very important with
respect to the body's natural anabolic
processes. Taking a very high protein
product in the form of liquid collagen prior
to sleep onset allows the body to access the
food at just the right time. During the
first 90 minutes of sleep for a normal
individual (who does not have a sleep
disorder), a person gets the deepest sleep
and the longest duration of that sleep.
The deepest sleep stages at night are called
stages 3 and 4 sleep. Stage 3 sleep I refer
to as "deep sleep" and stage 4 sleep I call
"very deep sleep." They are composed of
different amounts of a brain wave called
"delta." During the day our brainwave
patterns are mostly composed of "alpha" when
we are relaxed with our eyes closed and
"beta" when the eyes are open. Beta also
occurs when we're thinking, speaking,
listening, or looking at things. The
frequency of beta is around 15-30 cycles per
second or Hertz (Hz). When we relax and
close our eyes, particularly if we are not
thinking of anything, our brainwaves change
to "alpha", which have a frequency of around
8-12 or 13 cycles per second.
What is associated with sleep are two other
brainwaves: theta and delta. Theta, which
is 4-7 Hz, occurs during "light sleep"
(stage 1) and "medium sleep" (stage 2).
Delta occupies frequency range 0.5-2 or 3
cycles per second. Varying amounts of delta
activity define the differences between
stage 3 and 4 sleep.
When we first enter into sleep, we go into
stage 1 sleep for a few short minutes, then
stage 2, and then proceed directly to stages
3 and 4 (assuming normal sleep patterns).
Descent into sleep is like a staircase
downward: stage 1, stage 2, stage 3, stage
4, light sleep, medium sleep, deep sleep,
very deep sleep. After 80-90 minutes, we
re-ascend the sleep staircase, climbing back
up from stages 4, 3, 2, etc. then we enter
a special sleeping state called REM, short
for rapid eye movement, sleep, when we
The first sleep period (of 4 or 5) of the
night occurs during the first 90 minutes.
It has the largest amount of deep sleep and
this is very important to the release of a
growth hormone that our bodies use for
rejuvenation and repair. The second sleep
period has less deep sleep. The third sleep
period would usually have no or very little
deep sleep and relatively little stage 3
sleep and hence very little growth hormone
release. By the time a person gets to the
fourth sleep period around 4-5 a.m. in the
morning, there is usually no stage 3 or 4
deep sleep at all (and growth hormone
release has all but ceased). All your
remaining sleep will consist of stages 1, 2
and REM, with increasingly longer REM
periods (and more intense dreams!) towards
the end of the night.
During stages 3 and 4 of deep sleep, "we
release growth hormone from the pituitary
gland into the blood stream. Growth hormone
has the beneficial effects of building up
lean muscle mass and burning fat!" If we
provide the body with a high amount of
protein near the time it produces growth
hormone, it will utilize it very
There is also another factor to be
considered from a nutritional standpoint
called "specific dynamic action" (SDA). The
SDA is different for the three food groups:
fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Proteins
require the most amount of work to digest
and consume the most amount of calories
during this process. This is because
proteins have to be uncoupled into separate
amino acids. You can think of a protein as
either a long string of beads or a long line
of box cars in a train that have to be
uncoupled in individual beads or individual
box cars. Proteins have to be broken down
into short poly peptides or free amino acids
before they can be absorbed by the
intestinal villi into the bloodstream. The
energy to adjust proteins (break them down
into free amino acids), requires the
expenditure of calories. "This is why it is
most beneficial to provide the body with a
very high protein food at the particular
time of the 24 hour day when we’re most
likely to be utilizing our anabolic
processes" - during stages 3 and 4 sleep -

Calorad® in muscular development and
total well being
By John H. Norris,
M.D., Ph.D. and Reginald D. Barnes, Jr.,
Calorad® is a specially formulated collagen
product designed by Michel Grisé, which when
used as directed, can result in significant
fat loss, an increase in lean body muscular
mass and increased well being, as
demonstrated in clinical trials conducted
over a period of several months.
In human physiology,
it is well known that muscle and adipose
(fat) tissue metabolism are influenced
directly by the complex interplay between
insulin, exercise, glucocorticoid (stress
hormones), growth hormone (GH), amino acids
(including arginine and leucine), proteins,
L-hydroxyproline, fats and other substances.
Calorad® appears to augment known
physiological processes in the metabolism of
fat and muscle, which might explain its
success as discussed below.
Little if any fat
catabolism (fat burning) can take place in
the presence of high insulin levels such as
those found in, but not limited to, type two
diabetes mellitus with insulin resistance
or, most commonly, after eating a meal high
in carbohydrates or fat. Insulin levels are
lowest during fasting.
When Calorad® is used as directed after
three to four hour fast prior to going to
bed, the subject has extended the hours of
fasting significantly in addition to that
which occurs during sleep. This results in
longer periods of low insulin levels,
allowing more time for fatty acid metabolism
and resultant fat loss. GH is one of
several significant hormones involved in
muscular development and it is secreted
episodically 24 hours daily. Synthetic
growth hormones are often abused by body
builders attempting to produce muscular
hypertrophy (increased muscular size).
Patients with low growth hormone levels
often have little muscle mass and/or tone.
The most consistent period of GH secretion
in both children and young adults (and
possibly other age groups), is within the
onset of the first slow wave sleep (deep
sleep). Delay in the onset of the deep sleep
usually results in the delay in the onset of
the major GH peak.
GH levels are highest during slow wave sleep
and lowest during rapid eye movement (REM)
sleep. Furthermore, GH secretion is
augmented during fasting. Preliminary
studies of Calorad® - collagen suggest a
significant deepening in all levels of
sleep. This might allow for an increased net
secretion of growth hormone and an increase
in muscular mass. What’s more, this deeper
sleep might account for the subjective
feeling of "improved well being" described
in many subjects using Calorad®.
Protein, amino acids, L-hydroxyproline, and
other building blocks of muscle and collagen
are essential for muscle rebuilding. During
rest, a complex interplay takes place as
muscle and cartilage repair under the
influence of GH. If one is deficient in any
one of these building blocks necessary for
muscle rebuilding, those building blocks
will be removed from a healthy muscle
(catabolism). Furthermore, certain amino
acids, particularly arginine and leucine,
stimulate GH secretion. When subjects take
Calorad®, this catabolic process is felt to
be limited because Calorad® is rich in the
amino acids and the collagen building blocks
necessary for muscle and cartilage growth,
thus resulting in a net increase in lean
body mass. At present, studies are being
designed to measure GH and insulin levels
during sleep in subjects using Calorad®
versus matched controls.

"A very healthy
food component!" It is simple to use -
you take a tablespoon of Calorad® just
before you go to sleep and live your
normal life. That's it.
Take a tablespoon
of Calorad® with eight ounces of water
right at sleep time, just before hitting
the pillow and closing your eyes. Not
that you stay up, read, TV, etc.
You should have
an empty stomach, which means no solid
food for at least three hours before
taking Calorad®. No liquids for at least
two hours prior to bedtime except for
water that can be taken anytime.
If you have eaten
late and do not wish to stay up the
minimum three hours, it is suggested
that you take Calorad® on the next
morning when waking up and not eat for
at least 30-45 minutes after taking it.
The reason for
the empty stomach is to help insure that
Calorad® go as efficiently as possible
into the bloodstream as opposed to going
through the intestinal system, thereby
not getting the best benefit, i.e. “good

WE HAVE A PROBLEM.
We are all facing it.
It's been over 20 years since the fitness
revolution began. We spend over $40 billion
a year on weight loss and fitness, all to
look and feel good.
IT ISN'T WORKING.
We are losing the
battle. Many of us are overweight, tired and
sluggish. Most diets don't work and we can't
stick to an exercise program. The extra fat
we carry around is really stored energy, but
we seem to be unable to utilize it without
creating health problems.
More and more
studies are confirming that excess weight is
a problem the world over. With aging
populations, the threat to our health is
greater than ever before!
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?
First, it's not our
fault. The world has changed and we must
adapt. Our bodies were made to expend more
calories throughout the day. Modern
technology and our new, more sedentary
lifestyles have created this dilemma. Now
modern technology, along with Mother Nature,
has given us an alternative.
When you lose fat and
inches, you look great, feel great and have
more vitality. Calorad® assists the body in
utilizing unwanted fat, thereby allowing us
to lead a more robust and healthy
lifestyle*. This all-natural collagen-based
drink may change your life. Thousands of
people, including many health care
professionals, are using Calorad® and
looking better than ever before. Doctors are
advising their patients and clients to try
Calorad® as a safe alternative that may help
them to look and feel better.
SOUND TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?
THE HISTORY OF CALORAD®
Some twenty years
ago, Michel Grisé, a brilliant Canadian
formulator, was asked by a veterinarian
friend to formulate a product that would
eliminate "fatty liver syndrome" in poultry
(fat chickens stop laying eggs). Within
days, the excess fat was eliminated and the
chickens and the farmers were happy.
THAT'S GREAT FOR
CHICKENS, BUT WHAT ABOUT US?
That's where the
really great news begins. Due to the
dramatic success of the product, Michel
decided to reformulate it for people, naming
it "Calorad®." Michel tested it on himself
and shared the positive results with us.
That was over 20 years ago! Since then,
hundreds of thousands of people have
achieved dramatic results by using
HERE'S THE PLAN.
You take a tablespoon
of Calorad® just before you go to sleep and
live your normal life. That's it. Could it
be any simpler?
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SLEEP.
In the first 45 to 90
minutes of sleep your body should enter
"Delta Sleep Mode." During this stage, the
body repairs and rebuilds itself. Source:
David Duhon, M.D./Neurologist It is
suggested that you do not eat or drink
anything except water for at least three
hours before sleep. The body should look for
another source of fuel to create the energy
required to assist the rebuilding process.
Remember, fat is stored energy. When we were
young we had faster metabolisms and our
bodies used energy to build muscle and bone
and to maintain good health while we slept.
As we get older, this process slows down.
There is nothing complicated about Calorad®.
It works naturally with the body.
It is a ready source of nutrition.

The effects of collagen hydrolysat on
symptoms of chronic fibromyalgia and
temporomandibular joint pain. Olson GB,
Savage S, Olson J.; PMID: 11202824 [PubMed -
indexed for MEDLINE]
Twenty (20) people who had medically
diagnosed fibromyalgia for two to 15+ years
participated in and completed a 90-day
evaluation to determine effects of collagen
hydrolysat on symptoms of chronic
fibromyalgia, with twelve reporting
temporomandibular joint pain. Collagen
hydrolysat is a food supplement that is
available without prescription, with no
known side effects. Participants were
evaluated initially and then at 30-, 60-,
and 90-day periods. Final results were
obtained and comparisons made. The average
pain complaint levels decreased
significantly in an overall group average,
and dramatically with some individuals.
It was concluded that patients with
fibromyalgia and concurrent
temporomandibular joint problems may gain
symptomatic improvement in their chronic
symptoms by taking collagen hydrolysat.

OBJECTIVE: Oral administration of
cartilage-derived type II collagen (CII) has
been shown to ameliorate arthritis in animal
models of joint inflammation, and
preliminary studies have suggested that this
novel therapy is clinically beneficial and
safe in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
(RA). The present study was undertaken to
test the safety and efficacy of 4 different
dosages of orally administered CII in
patients with RA.
METHODS: Two hundred
seventy-four patients with active RA were
enrolled at 6 different sites and randomized
to receive placebo or 1 of 4 dosages (20,
100, 500, or 2,500 microg/day) of oral CII
for 24 weeks. Efficacy parameters were
assessed monthly. Cumulative response rates
(percentage of patients meeting the criteria
for response at any time during the study)
were analyzed utilizing 3 sets of composite
criteria: the Paulus criteria, the American
College of Rheumatology criteria for
improvement in RA, and a requirement for >
or = 30% reduction in both swollen and
tender joint counts.
percent of patients completed 24 weeks of
treatment. Numeric trends in favor of the 20
microg/day treatment group were seen with
all 3 cumulative composite measures.
However, a statistically significant
increase (P = 0.035) in response rate for
the 20 microg/day group versus placebo was
detected using only the Paulus criteria. The
presence of serum antibodies to CII at
baseline was significantly associated with
an increased likelihood of responding to
treatment. No treatment-related adverse
events were detected. The efficacy seen with
the lowest dosage is consistent with the
findings of animal studies and with known
mechanisms of oral tolerance in which lower
doses of orally administered autoantigens
preferentially induce disease-suppressing
Positive effects were observed with CII at
the lowest dosage tested, and the presence
of serum antibodies to CII at baseline may
predict response to therapy. No side effects
were associated with this novel therapeutic
agent. Further controlled studies are
required to assess the efficacy of this
Role of collagen hydrolysate in bone and

OBJECTIVES: To review the current status of
collagen hydrolysate in the treatment of
osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.
METHODS: Review of
past and current literature relative to
collagen hydrolysate metabolism, and
assessment of clinical investigations of
therapeutic trials in osteoarthritis and
gelatin products have long been used in
pharmaceuticals and foods; these products
are generally recognized as safe food
products by regulatory agencies.
Pharmaceutical-grade collagen hydrolysate
(PCH) is obtained by hydrolysis of
pharmaceutical gelatin. Clinical studies
suggest that the ingestion of 10 g PCH daily
reduces pain in patients with osteoarthritis
of the knee or hip; blood concentration of
hydroxyproline is increased. Clinical use is
associated with minimal adverse effects,
mainly gastrointestinal, characterized by
fullness or unpleasant taste. In a
multicenter, randomized, doubleblind,
placebo-controlled trial performed in
clinics in the United States, United
Kingdom, and Germany, results showed no
statistically significant differences for
the total study group (all sites) for
differences of mean pain score for pain.
There was, however, a significant treatment
advantage of PCH over placebo in German
sites. In addition, increased efficacy for
PCH as compared to placebo was observed in
the overall study population amongst
patients with more severe symptomatology at
study onset. Preferential accumulation of
14C-labeled gelatin hydrolysate in cartilage
as compared with administration of
14C-labeled proline has been reported. This
preferential uptake by cartilage suggests
that PCH may have a salutary effect on
cartilage metabolism. Given the important
role for collagen in bone structure, the
effect of PCH on bone metabolism in
osteoporotic persons has been evaluated.
Studies of the effects of calcitonin with
and without a collagen hydrolysate-rich diet
suggested that calcitonin plus PCH had a
greater effect in inhibiting bone collagen
breakdown than calcitonin alone, as
characterized by a fall in levels of urinary
pyridinoline cross-links. PCH appeared to
have an additive effect relative to use of

it attractive as an agent for long-term use
