Natural Remedies for Asthma

These days many people look to nature to provide natural remedies for asthma and many other conditions. Natural remedies have been developed to provide gentle, safe and effective relief from respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath, tight chest and wheezing or persistent cough induced by an allergic reaction or the common cold.

It is important to select natural remedies for asthma that treat all the symptoms and provide ongoing support and relief. The combinations of individual herbs in natural remedies for asthma are often selected for their complementary and additive effect. The right herbal combinations can also, in addition to relieving the asthma symptoms, support the health of the mucus membranes, the respiratory system's first natural line of defense. Unlike pharmaceutical remedies, natural remedies for asthma can aid the body by enhancing it's own natural defense mechanisms for conditions like asthma.

Benefits of Natural Remedies for Asthma

Asthma can be treated in a number of ways, here are some benefits of using natural remedies...

  • Reduce or eliminate episodes of persistent coughing, difficulty breathing, or wheezing (especially in the morning), tightness in the chest, recurrent ear, nose and or throat infections (i.e. additional symptoms associated with the asthmatic condition)
  • Reduce use or reliance on antihistamines, decongestants, nasal sprays, inhaled steroids, inhaled bronchodilators, antibiotics, cough, cold and flu remedies.
  • If you have a more advanced condition and if you have been repeatedly dissatisfied with the outcome of other treatment (or preventive) measures, you may benefit best from a combination of natural remedies that treat both sinus and bronchial symptoms of asthma and promote the bodies own healing abilities….naturally!

Causes and Symptoms of Asthma

In simple terms asthma is a chronic lung condition characterized by difficulty breathing due to narrowed or obstructed airways that can be successfully treated with natural remedies for asthma.

The airways in people with asthma are extra sensitive or hyper-responsive (more so than the "average" person) and when they become irritated, by "triggers" or "inducers", they react by narrowing (broncho-constriction) or obstructing (with inflammation or mucous). A narrow or obstructed airway makes it much more difficult for air to move in and out and a number of symptoms can result:

  • tightness in the chest
  • shortness of breath
  • wheezing (or noisy, labored breathing)
  • coughing

Once asthma has been diagnosed it's up to you to decide on traditional treatment, natural remedies for asthma or a combination of both. Natural remedies for asthma have been developed to provide gentle, safe and effective relief from respiratory symptoms.

Children are at a Higher Risk

An airway becomes obstructed as a result of inflammation and swelling and/or it may become plugged with mucous, drastically reducing the inside diameter of the airway and the amount of air that can move through it. It does not take much restriction in children, whose airways are already small, before breathing becomes impaired and labored. Using natural remedies for asthma in children often results in the diminished use or reliance on prescription medications (along with their unwanted side effects).

Asthma Triggers

Triggers cause broncho-constriction (tightening of the airways) but they do not cause inflammation and so asthma attacks caused by triggers are not considered true asthma attacks. The symptoms caused by broncho-constriction are usually short-lived and reverse themselves rapidly, usually when the trigger is removed.

Triggers become an important factor when a trigger is introduced to an existing airway inflammation. The combination of the already inflamed airway and the broncho-constriction can result in great difficulty breathing. Natural remedies for asthma are proven effective in reducing inflammation in airways.

There are many common triggers that may aggravate existing asthma symptoms including dust, smoke, strong fumes (ammonia, bleach, glue), inhaled irritants, emotional upset and exercise. Natural remedies for asthma can often counter many asthma triggers without the side effects of medication.

Asthma Inducers

Inducers cause both airway inflammation and airway hyper-responsiveness and are the recognized causes of true asthma. Symptoms caused by inducers tend to last longer and are not as easily reversible as those cause by triggers. That's why control and treatment of asthma inducers with natural remedies for asthma is important in order to minimize irreversible damage caused by the condition.

Common inducers include a variety of allergens:

  • pollen
  • molds
  • house dust mites (often found in bedding and heating ducts)
  • animal secretions (cats and horses are the worst offenders)
  • viral respiratory infections like influenza and pneumonia (a flu vaccine may be recommended for asthma sufferers)
